New York Mesothelioma Attorney Praises Research into Early Diagnosis and Treatment Methods

New York Mesothelioma Attorney Praises Research into Early Diagnosis and Treatment Methods

New York mesothelioma lawyer Joseph W. Belluck

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 27, 2012

New York mesothelioma attorney Joseph W. Belluck said today that researchers’ identification of a small molecule more abundant in the blood of people with mesothelioma is another reason for optimism among several this spring for sufferers of the asbestos-related cancer.

He was referring to a report recently given by Australian researchers at the European Lung Cancer Conference (ELCC) in Geneva, Switzerland. According to the researchers, molecules known as microRNAs in blood could serve as a diagnostic marker for mesothelioma.

A diagnostic marker based on a simple blood test could eventually limit the need for a lung biopsy, which is currently the standard procedure, according to an ELCC press release.

Belluck noted that significant groundbreaking work is also taking place in Dr. Harvey Pass’ lab at New York University in New York City on the mesothelioma markers.

“This research points the way to a new, easier means of diagnosing mesothelioma in its early stages, and it’s yet another reason for a positive outlook among all of those who must deal with this devastating disease,” said Belluck, a founding partner of the New York personal injury firm, Belluck & Fox, LLP.

“Anything that helps us to better understand mesothelioma gives us more hope that the key to a cure is out there, waiting to be found,” added Belluck, who focuses on mesothelioma and other asbestos-exposure cases.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the outer lining of the lungs and abdomen. It is caused by exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring heat- and fire-resistant mineral. Asbestos has been used in a variety of equipment, industrial machinery and consumer products.

Belluck noted that clinical trial results released in March by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine said that chemotherapy combined with gene therapy shrinks mesothelioma tumors twice as quickly as traditional treatments.

The Penn study was followed by publication of “The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy and the Boy Who Saved It” by Ricki Lewis, which presents an optimistic look at the history and future of gene therapy as a means of fighting mesothelioma and other diseases.

“The news about mesothelioma in the last two months has been hopeful,” he said

Mesothelioma victims typically show disease symptoms many years after exposure to asbestos in an occupational setting. The disease is terminal, but aggressive therapy can prolong the lives of patients who are diagnosed early.

“We strongly encourage anyone exposed to asbestos even once who exhibits symptoms like shortness of breath, a lingering cough or chest pain, or night sweats to see a doctor as soon as possible,” Belluck said.

Freeborders Launches Solution Accelerators for Hotels Marketing to Chinese Consumers

Freeborders Launches Solution Accelerators for Hotels Marketing to Chinese Consumers

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 08, 2012

Freeborders Inc., a global provider of consulting, technology and outsourcing solutions, today introduced Web2China℠ and Mobile2China℠ solution accelerators. These accelerators are specifically designed for hotel chains marketing to the China consumer for hotels in China and the Chinese consumer traveling internationally.

“Rapid urbanization, rising income, increased personal and professional travel and a fragmented hotel industry make China a lucrative market for international hotel chains,” said Jean Cholka, CEO of Freeborders. “As a western company with a large presence in China, experience in the travel industry and a strong track record of developing robust booking engines as well as web and mobile interfaces, Freeborders is uniquely qualified to help these hotels access the China market successfully. It is much more complicated than simply translating language from an English website.”

The company has conducted an analysis of the top hotel chains marketing to the Chinese consumer and found that over 80% have deficiencies with their website and their mobile sites are not adequately built for the mature mobile market in China. The survey findings indicate that:

Chinese consumer spending on hotels is increasing 21% annually and is projected to continue at this rate or higher through 2015.
80% of existing Hotel websites have serious problems that negatively affect perception of their brand and “turn off” the Chinese consumer.
Although China is the number one market for smartphones and 80% of Chinese companies have a mobile website – only 20% of multinational companies marketing to China have a mobile website or app.
66% of Chinese consumers access the web from their mobile phones.
According to Google, the number of mobile users researching travel via their mobile devices is expected to grow 51% in 2012.

“Multinational companies have burned millions of dollars to access the China web and mobile consumer and they often just don’t get it,” said Mike Keating, SVP of Internet Strategies at Freeborders. “Most don’t realize how different the online consumer behavior is in China. They try to bring their western processes and marketing strategies into China and they are just not effective. We listened to the market and packaged our experience and tools specifically for companies exporting to China.”

These solution accelerators support business growth opportunities for the international hospitality industry currently flocking to China. Both solutions offer a quick jump-start with tangible deliverables.

Freeborders® Web2China – This solution provides a functional prototype website along with an architectural model, roadmap and business case for moving forward within approximately 60 days. An enterprise implementation with booking engine integration and GDS interfaces, are typically the next steps for each client.

Freeborders® Mobile2China – Within three weeks, Freeborders delivers a working prototype for a mobile site in China. It includes an onsite assessment, architecture, navigation prototype, test plan and optimal China mobile device configurations. Following this phase the company provides a production-ready China web mobile solution within approximately three months.

These solutions address the top three concerns expressed by existing clients and prospects:

1.    China as a travel destination is growing quickly and we want to take this business from our competitors

2.    How can we get a quick, yet quality start on winning a piece of the China travel business?

3.    How has Freeborders helped customers execute an entry into China successfully and quickly?

The company has recently published a whitepaper “Advances in Travel Technology” which discusses ten technologies that are changing the global travel industry.

Founded in 1999, Freeborders provides global IT consulting, technology and outsourcing services. Total Hearing Solutions Presents Seminars for Tinnitus Sufferers

Total Hearing Solutions Presents Seminars for Tinnitus Sufferers

Carmel, IND. (PRWEB) January 10, 2012

Total Hearing Solutions, a division of Northside ENT, will hold informational seminars on tinnitus Tuesday, Jan. 24, in Carmel.

The morning seminar will take place 10:30 a.m.-12 noon at the Monon Community Center’s east building at 1235 Central Park Drive East. The evening seminar, 6-7:30 p.m., will take place at the Total Hearing Solutions clinic at 12065 Old Meridian, Suite 200. Both sessions will address new treatments for tinnitus, the widespread condition defined as the perception of sound when no external sound is present. Tinnitus affects more than 50 million people in the United States. The condition, usually brought on by exposure to loud noise, is especially significant in the military, with more than 34 percent of returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from tinnitus.

Seminar speakers will include Kira VonBlon, director of audiology at Total Hearing Solutions, and Jamie Gabbard, Au.D., of Professoinal Hearing Healthcare in Muncie. They will include discussion of the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment (NTT), a particularly effective treatment protocol delivered through its easy-to-use Oasis device. The device is the FDA-cleared, patented and clinically proven medical device with documented long-term relief of severe or chronic tinnitus. Total Hearing Solutions is the only provider in Carmel, and one of only four in the Indianapolis, to offer the NTT, which CNN has featured in a segment on tinnitus treatment.

The Oasis device looks like a small consumer music player and works by desensitizing the patient’s tinnitus perception. The patient wears the device for a prescribed number of hours on a daily basis, listening to soothing music that audiologists customize to each person’s unique hearing profile. A recent independent study shows that more than 90 percent of patients who use the NTT experience a significant reduction in tinnitus.

“The Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment has proven to be one of the most effective ways to treat tinnitus on a long-term basis,” says VonBlon. “The Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment reduces hypersensitivity and annoying environmental sounds – all by allowing the user to enjoy music, without constant distraction of their tinnitus. The treatment enables the brain to create alternative pathways so tinnitus is no longer perceived.”

RSVP, More information

The seminars are open to the public as well as medical providers and clinicians who find tinnitus a debilitating condition among their patients. While there is no fee, RSVP is required. Attendees can contact Tammy Johnson at Total Hearing Solutions by Jan. 19: 317-705-2700 or tjohnson(at)northsideent(dot)com. Light refreshments will be served at the event.

Total Hearing Solutions (http://www.totalhearingsolutions.com)

Economic Crisis Hits Maryland Hospitals Nearly 60 Percent of Hospitals Sustain Financial Losses

Economic Crisis Hits Maryland Hospitals Nearly 60 Percent of Hospitals Sustain Financial Losses

Maryland Hospital Association

Elkridge, MD (PRWEB) March 26, 2009

The economic crisis is taking a significant toll on Maryland hospitals, causing their finances to slide to unprecedented low levels during the final quarter of 2008. Maryland hospitals’ total margins dropped to negative 13.5 percent between October 1 and December 31, 2008, compared to 2.2 percent during the same time in 2007. Hospitals’ total margins had already fallen to a negative 2.5 percent in the quarter ending September 30, 2008. Total margins measure the overall financial condition of Maryland’s hospitals, which are almost exclusively not-for-profit facilities.

“At the very time when the economy is forcing more Marylanders to turn to hospitals for their only source of health care, the economy is crippling Maryland hospitals’ ability to meet the growing demand,” Carmela Coyle, MHA President and CEO, said. “That means hospitals have significantly less money to hire new staff, invest in new services and programs or technology, to upgrade buildings, or to help physicians.”

The situation in Maryland is far worse than for hospitals nationwide, where the deficit for total margins was negative 7.8 percent for the final three months of 2008.

Thirty-four Maryland hospitals sustained overall losses during that three-month period totaling $ 466 million, according to a new financial analysis by the Maryland Hospital Association.

Most of hospitals’ losses resulted from increases in interest rates, losses on returns, and other increases in costs needed to provide financing to upgrade or expand programs and to underwrite the costs of new technology. Operating margins–which measure financial performance in providing care–while dropping, did not fall as precipitously. Overall operating margins in the fourth quarter of 2008 were 1.5 percent–down from 2.4 percent in the quarter ending September 30. That is well below the rate-setting commission’s target of 2.75 percent and below the 1.8 percent operating margins for hospitals nationwide for the quarter ending December 31.

The losses Maryland hospitals face are forcing them to limit their purchases of new technology and equipment, and to delay upgrades in information technology according to a new MHA survey. Hospitals also report adopting, or considering, hiring freezes and staff reductions; eliminating vacant positions; and cutting administrative spending, including educational and meeting expenses. In addition, hospitals report the losses have led to a significant increase in hospitals’ pension liability costs.

Furthermore, the survey found the economy is forcing more and more physicians to approach hospitals for financial support, ranging from widespread requests for hospital employment to nearly universal requests for pay increases to provide services to hospitals. In 2008 hospitals provided $ 210 million in support to physicians.

“With a physician shortage particularly intense in inner city Baltimore and rural parts of the state, financial support for doctors is vital to assure access to care in these areas,” Coyle said.

“Hospitals are the bedrocks of our communities, both as providers of health care to all who need assistance and as the economic engines for our communities,” Coyle added. “Anything that weakens our hospitals poses a threat to the economy of Maryland and the well-being of our state.”

MHA is the advocate for Maryland hospitals, health systems, and their patients before legislative and regulatory bodies. Its membership is comprised of community and teaching hospitals, health systems, specialty hospitals, veterans hospitals, and long-term care facilities. For more information, visit MHA’s Web site.

MEDSEEK Links Western North Carolina and Veterans Affairs

MEDSEEK Links Western North Carolina and Veterans Affairs

Birmingham, Alabama (PRWEB) August 18, 2011

MEDSEEK, the industry’s only provider of the optimal 360-degree online healthcare experience, today announced the successful connection of WNC Health Network’s health information exchange, called WNC Data Link, to the Veterans Administration’s Health Information Systems Technology Architecture (VistA). Data Link, established in 2006, connects 16 hospitals in Western North Carolina to the VA and is the first of its kind in the US. Utilizing MEDSEEK’s eConnect health information exchange technology, the hospitals in the federated model maintain separate HIE systems and pull data from members’ systems to present patient records wherever it is needed.

With the veteran’s affirmative consent, the project allows the member hospitals of the WNC Data Link to share health information with the VA and WNC Health Network hospitals, to ensure that physicians can access the most recent, accurate medical records for participating veterans.

“The connection between Data Link and the Veterans Administration is one of the first in the country and we are committed to providing the best care for our veterans and all WNC patients,” said Janice Lato, President and CEO of WNC Health Network. “Data Link, the VA and MEDSEEK have worked diligently to bring this groundbreaking program together.”

More than two hundred veterans have opted in to the live trials since the July 2011 launch and a further 9,000 veterans will be offered the opportunity to join later this year.

“MEDSEEK is excited about the connection of Data Link to the VA,” said Peter Kuhn, MEDSEEK CEO. “By providing accurate patient information wherever it is needed we can do our part to ensure that veterans and all patients are provided the best care experience regardless of which WNC hospital they choose for treatment.”

The member hospitals range in size from 25 to 740 beds and are spread across 15 western North Carolina cities and towns. The project was possible because of the hospitals’ longstanding collaborative relationships with each other. They have a long history of collaboration through group purchasing, quality and wellness initiatives, even though some hospitals compete with others for patients in nearby markets. The 16 independent hospitals jointly save $ 1.4 million annually by providing geographically dispersed clinicians with timely and comprehensive patient information.

ABOUT WNC Health Network

The WNC Health Network, established in 1995, is a collaboration of hospitals and other health care providers that support the delivery of cost-effective, quality health services to the Western North Carolina region. The Network’s members in WNC Data Link include Angel Medical Center, CarePartners Health Services, Cherokee Indian Hospital, Harris Regional Hospital, Haywood Regional Medical Center, Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, The McDowell Hospital, Mission Hospital, Murphy Medical Center, Pardee Hospital, Park Ridge Health, Rutherford Regional Medical Center, Blue Ridge Regional Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, Swain County Hospital and Transylvania Regional Hospital.

About MEDSEEK

Since 1996, MEDSEEK has focused exclusively on creating a 360-degree optimal eHealth experience for patients, clinicians and administrative staff by removing traditional integration and communication barriers, workflow roadblocks and redundant processes. Used by more than 1000 hospitals, MEDSEEK solutions enable hospitals to execute enterprise-wide strategic objectives by improving quality of care, uncovering new sources of revenue and generating meaningful loyalty among physicians and patients with a low-risk, high-return investment that leverages existing IT investments and infrastructure. US Senate Resolution Recognizes National Nurse-Managed Health Clinic Week, October 2-8, 2011

US Senate Resolution Recognizes National Nurse-Managed Health Clinic Week, October 2-8, 2011

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 27, 2011

Nurse practitioners, advanced practice nurses and registered nurses from across the United States will celebrate National Nurse-Managed Health Clinic Week, October 2-8, 2011. Senate Resolution 256, co-sponsored by Senator Daniel K. Inouye (D-HI), and Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), which was approved by the Senate on September 13, 2011, officially designates the week beginning October 2nd as National Nurse-Managed Health Clinic Week.

Nurse-managed health clinics serve as crucial health care access points for vulnerable and underserved patients in rural, urban and suburban communities throughout the country. This designated week will provide a national forum to promote the services offered by the 250 nurse-managed health clinics in the United States and recognize the contributions of nurse practitioners and nurse-managed health clinics throughout the nation.

“National Nurse-Managed Health Clinic Week celebrates the work of nurse-managed health clinics operating in the United States. It also highlights the need for policymakers to continue funding these clinics through the Affordable Care Act’s Public Health Prevention Fund,” said Tine Hansen-Turton, Chief Executive Officer of National Nursing Centers Consortium (NNCC), a national organization that provides critical support to these nurse-managed health clinics.

Last year, the US Department of Health and Human Services released $ 14.8 million in Prevention Fund dollars to support grants to 10 nurse-managed clinics as part of the Affordable Care Act’s Nurse-Managed Health Clinic Grant Program. These grants, which were intended to enhance ongoing efforts to increase primary care access and develop the health care workforce, are already proving to be extremely successful. The clinics receiving funding are expected to provide primary care to over 94,000 patients and train more than 900 advanced practice nurses by the end of the grant period. However, in an effort to reduce federal spending, both Congress and the Obama Administration elected not to renew these grants in 2011.

Eighty percent of the care provided by nurse-managed clinics is preventative and the Institute of Medicine’s report on the Future of Nursing specifically states, “Nurse-managed health clinics offer opportunities to expand access; provide quality, evidence-based care; and improve outcomes for individuals who may not otherwise receive needed care. These clinics also provide the necessary support to engage individuals in wellness and prevention activities.” If Congress and the Obama Administration truly want to make prevention a priority, then it is absolutely critical that money be set aside to support nurse-managed clinics. Additionally, with close to 32 million new patients slated to receive insurance in 2014, the nation needs to take full advantage of all available quality primary care providers.

“Nurses are ready, willing and able to step up and meet our country’s primary care needs,” said Amy Barton PhD, MSN, the chairperson of NNCC’s Board of Directors. “By providing funding for nurse-managed clinics through the Public Health Prevention Fund, Congress will be enhancing the ability of these clinics to provide accessible, cost effective and high quality care to the most vulnerable Americans, and helping to educate the next generation of primary care providers.”

Nurse-managed health clinics are led by advanced practice nurses, most of whom are nurse practitioners who act as primary care providers for patients. They provide primary care, health promotion and disease prevention services to patients least likely to receive ongoing health care services. This population includes patients of all ages who are uninsured, underinsured, living in poverty or members of racial and ethnic minority groups. More than 85 of the nation’s leading nursing schools operate nurse-managed health clinics, enhancing learning and practice opportunities for nursing students and other health professions students.
